A trip to New South Wales would not be complete without a visit to the Blue Mountains. Less than two hours from Sydney by road or train, the World Heritage listed Blue Mountains are one of the country's most spectacular icons. With picturesque villages, breathtaking views, and so much to see and do, the Blue Mountains are the perfect holiday destination for families, nature lovers, and adventure seekers. There is always something going on in the Blue Mountains, from village festivals and flower festivals, to classic car meets, musical events, sporting events and markets. The Blue Mountains, Lithgow and Oberon Tourism Festival of Walking is held in October, and includes bushwalks and treks, ambles through the countryside, family events, history tours and cheese and wine sampling. One of the most popular sporting events held in the area is the Capertee Challenge "a mountain bike event through Capertee Valley, the largest enclosed valley in Australia. Oktoberfest at the Carrington Hotel in Katoomba is another popular event, serving up German music, German food, German beer, and a whole lot of fun. Or if you fancy something a bit more tranquil, visit the famous Leura Garden Festival, held annually in October since 1964. The Blue Mountains Music Festival of Folk, Blues and Roots is an event that draws visitors from across the country. This three-day festival of folk, roots and blues music is held each March, and features a selection of artists from around the world and across Australia.
