10 Free Things to Do With Kids in Byron Bay

Byron Bay is one of the most beautiful and family friendly destinations in Northern NSW, and you don’t need to spend a lot to have your best holiday yet. Whether you and your family love to get outdoors or prefer to spend your time people-watching, there’s plenty to do without spending a fortune.

  1. Head to the beach. Spend the day by the sea with the whole family at one of the many stunning beaches in Byron Bay. Our favourites are Main Beach, Clarkes Beach and Wategos – perfect for sandcastle building, body surfing or just watching the world go by!

  2. Explore the markets. Byron Bay has some of the best markets in the region, with something to appeal to every member of the family. Pick up your produce for the week, or just wander amongst the stalls, chat to the locals and ‘window’ shop.

  3. Do the Byron Lighthouse Walk. At 3.7kms, it’s easy enough for even little legs, and the view from the eastern-most point of Australia will be worth the walk. If your little ones can be convinced out of bed early, it’s the perfect place to watch the sunrise, something your family will remember long after your holiday has ended.

  4. Explore the Byron Hinterland and have a picnic at Minyon Falls. Pack the goodies you bought at the markets and take the kids on a hike to this stunning waterfall.

  5. Get crafty at the local library. If the weather isn’t the best, head to one of the local libraries in Byron Bay, Ballina, Lennox Head or Brunswick Heads. The libraries often run crafty sessions during school holidays, but if there’s no planned activities the kids can pick a book to read on the beach during your holiday.
  6. Jam to the free entertainment. Buskers abound in Byron Bay, so wander the streets and listen to the tunes! The ‘Top Pub’ is also family friendly and often has musicians performing for just the price of a drink.
  7. Get outdoors at the Broken Head Nature Reserve. This is regarded as a pretty well kept secret, where the rainforest meets the beach. An easy walk for kids of all ages, pack a picnic and spend the day.

  8. Spot a whale. During winter, the whales migrate north, right past Byron Bay! See if you can spot them playing from the lighthouse or one of the other lookout spots along the beach.
  9. Swim in Lake Ainsworth (Tea Tree Lake) at Suffolk Park. The waters of the Tea Tree Lake glow golden, and it’s warm all year round. Infused with the oils of the nearby Tea Tree plantations, swimming in the lake is very good for your skin, and is usually pretty quiet.

  10. Visit The Farm. This Byron institution is home to the beautiful farm-to-table restaurant, Three Blue Ducks, but it’s not just about fine food and wine. Kids can pat the animals, see where their food is grown and they even offer workshops for children to tap into their inner farmer. Explore their gift shop or just roam the grounds.
